I was enjoying use of this app until after using it on my iPad I used it on my phone. The app would then not let me use the app on either device until I had deleted the apps and reinstalled it on my iPad.

It said free but every time I tried to open any lesson it wants a subscription. Not free. False advertising

I am just doing this as a hobby, and it’s really nice for that. I didn’t really want to either pay for in person, nor was i looking forward to the logistics for just a fun little side activity at this point. I got a free guitar. I used to do music (not guitar) which helps a bit, but he covers the theory too which ultimately is pretty useful. For example you don’t really have to remember quite as much if you spend a little time understanding the theory. In any case this is comprehensive, covering some theory, technique, and getting you playing pretty fast. Instruments to generally take some practice though so be patient. I had enough experience to kind of treat this like golf. That’s probably a good analogy. Music is a bit like that where if you even stop you tend to get just a bit out of practice. He does a good job of covering all the issues that come up like unrealistic expectations not doing too much initially etc.

I first used this app about 4 years ago when I first started got me through my cowboy chords. I thought the timing was off now I see it was me. I’ve redownload the app to practice my caged chord changes and it’s just as fun and rewarding, maybe more. I like the choices of band, practice, etc. If developers made an option to remove the chord labels during playback, you could practice your ear training and figure out the chords.

Justin is an outstanding teacher, and his lessons are top notch. The content is a solid 5/5. But the current version of the app is 1/5 on Mac. It's absolutely burning up my CPU. I noticed when it ate through my 2023 Macbook Pro Max's battery in just a few hours (should last 12-18). Activity Monitor shows the app is constantly using 205% of CPU, and the energy impact score is 5440. For reference, this is about 11x the energy impact of Firefox with tons of tabs open, including an active Youtube tab, or several times the energy use of Cubase 13 Pro with a giant orchestral project loaded up. This is whether the app is in use, or just minimized. Either there's a serious glitch (most likely), or somebody hacked the app and injected it with crypto mining code. Moving on from that huge technical issue, the app could really benefit from mouse scrolling and basic keyboard controls (play/pause, skip back, skip forward, go back) on Mac. Finally, the videos are extremely loud and there's no way to control the volume of the app itself. I run my electric guitar through an interface (which outputs it through the same speakers as Justin), so it's not like I can simply turn down the system volume. I have to choose between having Justin at an acceptable volume but barely hearing my guitar, or absolutely cranking my guitar's gain, which destroys the sound quality.

Does not work. Won’t play backup tracks, etc.
  • The best music teaching app for me

I am not musically inclined, not creative in any way. I tried self teaching, then I tried you tube, then various apps. Justin Guitar has been the only one that really jives with me, I am actually starting to learn and progress. I am so glad I found this app.
  • Great beginner app

Let me start by saying, Ty! The instruction is very detailed but also leaves room for personal creativity.
