Fences

The cast and acting were superb. Denzel was awesome as usual. And there was a lot of dialogue, which is fine, but the story/movie felt incomplete and didn't rise to the level of the acting. I just don't think the story was written well, a missed opportunity in my opinion.

Holy crap this movie is depressing. The acting performances are all fantastic and while I really respect the decision to make it accurate to the play with its limited setting, I can’t get past the fact that this movie is sad for the sake of being sad. And to me, this felt like Oscar bait and nothing more. Maybe this movie just isn’t for me, but I can’t stand the fact that making a movie sad is almost guaranteed to net you an Oscar nod.

A POWERFUL AND WELL WRITTEN FILM. A MUST WATCH!

If you like movies with no plot and decent acting you might like this but I found it so boring and pointless it seemed like it would never end.

Yes it does seem like it’s just all talking but you have to follow the story, it is very well written. It had my attention all the way through the movie. Excellent acting!

Don't go in expecting to see a traditional movie, whose elements work very differently from those of a play. If you see theater a lot, and I don't mean feel-good, crowd-pleasing musicals, Fences is THE chance to catch Danzel Washington's and Viola Davis's Tony-winning performances that you probably missed while on Broadway. Fences is faithful to this masterpiece by August Wilson, in fact too faithful to feel like anything other than a play. Normally, plays capture a selected few moments of an event and dig deep into the dynamics and nuances that give these moments significance. Films, however, tend to offer a steamlined, structered, more complete protrayl of an event but sometimes fall short when it comes to more complex emotions and psychology. Fences, while having taken advantage of the flexibility of films, mostly built itself around what makes a play, satisfyingly. If you are a play person, this, along with the Gabriel family series, is easily a must-see.

You can tell right away this was written as a play. The cast did an amazing job. It's such an intense movie. A must see

Acting was great but it's over 2 hours I won't get back. Bad movie unless you just want to see good acting.
