Description

The Sunlit Night follows an aspiring painter (Slate) from New York City to the farthest reaches of Arctic Norway for an assignment she hopes will invigorate her work and expand her horizons. In a remote village, among the locals, she meets a fellow New Yorker (Sharp), who has come in search of a proper Viking funeral only to find that the Chief (Galifianakis) is but a re-enactor from Cincinnati. The eclectic crew ranges from "home" to "lost," within the extreme and dazzling landscape of the Far North. Under a sun that never quite sets, and the high standards of an unforgiving mentor, Frances must navigate between ambition, desire, obligation, and risk in order to find a way forward.

How do you have a cast of that many talented actors and make such a terrible movie? The trailer was more interesting than the whole thing. I hated it. You don’t give a dime about any of the characters, the “wisdom” and “thoughtfulness” that is randomly thrust upon you feels like the half baked theories about life from a trust fund baby. The cringe worthy editing and horrible dialogue and voice over gave me hives... if you want a beautiful movie that is funny with some soul searching please go watch Lost In Translation and enjoy yourself.
  • Sadly -- Another Miss from Jenny Slate

There’s something about Jenny Slate that gives you hope, that makes you want to root for her, that makes you come to her films with great expectations. This one seemed full of promise, but really, really fell short. The further in, the worse it got. It could have been a good story, but the filmmakers chose stock images, clichéd love interests, out of the blue transformations, instead of allowing character-driven cinema. And really, keeping Jenny Slate undressed in yet another film is simply a dumb choice. It’s not interesting and doesn’t add to the story, or to the character.

I love Jenny Slate. She’s adorable, quirky, and great at angst. All around fun movie. Slightly melancholy, but I’m glad I bought it.
