Description

White Noise is the definitive inside story of the alt-right, following Richard Spencer, Lauren Southern, and Mike Cernovich as they ride a wave of racist ideas to viral fame. Even as the movement breaks into the mainstream, it fractures, leaving its leaders to grapple with backlash, infighting, and self-doubt.

This isn’t alt right. And equating racism with the alt right isn’t even remotely close.

Arguably this film presents a fair, humanistic view into the beginnings of the ‘alt-right’ circa 2015 to the present. It focuses on three influential leaders: Mike Cernovich, Lauren Southern, and Richard Spencer. There are additional small appearances from Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes and the lesser-known alt-right writer/pundit Lucian Wintrich. Majority of the film is direct conversations and video of the leaders themselves. It may be shocking to some viewers, but these are real people. Throughout the film, there are small themes like online harassment campaigns, anti-feminism, and conspiracy theories; however, the three major themes that emerged for me are: status, nationalism, and race. All three main characters seek more status, renown, and influence. Spencer has an idealistic view of a future U.S. ethnostate with his vision of an advance rail-train that carries citizens to visit a museum commemorating his efforts. Cernovich uses a professional wrestling truism as an analogy—"bad guys are more popular”—to justify his outlandishness, which he perceives as more rewarding. He seeks to expand his audience and affect by trolling. Southern finds more likes, follows, and other social media validations as addicting. Second, Nationalism seems more important for Spencer and Southern. Spencer pushes the same Nazi rhetoric as always, and he longs for a white homeland for the “…dispossessed white race”. In a similar vein, Southern promotes the zero-sum game of refugees coming into Europe. Her opening claim that the numbers of ethic persons being the only defense for individual cultures from outsiders, in the context of a nation-state, is superficial and negligent. The commonly peddled conspiracy theory of white genocide fuels her nationalism; Cernovich also expressed support for the same. Third, it all boils down to race. All the characters are proud of being white and do not want ‘[their] [white] culture diluted.’ They all walk the line justifying or explicitly promoting violence, and they all share mixed company with overt white supremacists. The alt-right demonstrates that this is not your father’s good old racism. It is not draped in white robes with burning crosses, but it is educated, privileged, visually alluring, and organized, having bougie parties, rubbing arms with far-right politicians, or making sleek videos that reach thousands. Their rhetoric and arguments are not new, nor are they difficult to debunk. The challenge is the narrative seems so appealing to those who hold racial resentment—it is not a coordinated action to ‘fall the whites’ it is the inevitable gains of minorities in a pluralistic society (browning of America)—which creates the fear that these grifters exploit. Surprising, the three are not always in cahoots. Cernovich rightly points out that Spencer is turning people off with his Nazi rhetoric and Sieg Heils. Likewise, Southern rejects offers of a sexual encounter with McInnes (a married man). He later denies making the offer. The best part of the film was the attempted humanization of the three. I am not sure Director Daniel Lombroso even had this intention. Nevertheless, Cernovich and his wife seem to want him to move away from politics. She seems to fear that her child will suffer the sins of her father. Cernovich is less of a true believer than Spencer; Cernovich is contrarian because he seeks money. Spencer has run away to his mother’s mansion in Whitefish, Montana. He seems to still live a fantasy world of white identity and ethnic cleansing. Undoubtably evil, it makes you wonder what happen to make him this vile. From her nationalist date to her pregnancy, Southern seems disenchanted at times. She laments her situation of growing strong for the corporate politics, but she does not want to lose her perceived nurturing qualities necessary to being a mother. She grows visibly uncomfortable when ask about the father being not white. I really hope she is second guessing herself on white nationalism. I recommend you watch this film to gain insight on the growing white neo-fascist movement in the world, especially the U.S. Unfortunately, most right-leaning viewers will erroneously reject the film because of petty partisanship. I would remind them you can still be a principled conservative and reject neo-fascist elements that vote the same way you do.

This is not a propaganda film. It follows the subjects through the course of their lives and it tells the story through their own words. It does not pass judgment. It is a window into the lives of three partisans from the alt right.

“Passion and self-interests are threats to liberty.” The movie is a weak attempt to demonize those that do not support the left’s Marxist ideology. In short, all passion no substance. Save your money.

Richard Spencer said he supported Biden to troll him. Spencer is an inbred, anti-Zionist..like the rest of Trumps alt-right sheep.

Really they have been putting more and more “documentaries” out trying to re-educate people and saying the right is “full of hate”. Just gives more cause to say that they are losing Greg on reality.
