Description

Nominated for two 2020 Oscars® and starring Oscar®-winner Roberto Benigni as Gepetto, the enchantingly reimagined Pinocchio is the timeless tale of a puppet wondrously bestowed with life, one who dreams of becoming a real boy. But Pinocchio’s quest is complicated by his misadventures among a host of otherworldly creatures – a fox-and-cat bandit duo, an asthmatic dogfish, a talking cricket, and others – until he meets a kind blue-haired fairy, whose only wish is to make his dreams come true. Includes the original Italian audio (with English subtitles) and English dubbed audio.

I miss the magic I expected from the much anticipated Italian version. Alas, each of the high caliber acting cameos feel strained and contrived, the cinematography sticks with a nice color palette and sticks to the book’s original illustrations. But the rest seems empty.

One teenage son kept comparing this version of Pinocchio with Disney's sanitized version, pointing out specific differences in characters and plot twists, where ugly evil hearts are changed, or not, by nobilities of love, fidelity, and self sacrifice. At first, with Disney's sweet childhood tale in memory, this stories dark themes and Christ like solutions elicited uneasy expressions of unbelief. Composer came with dad’s inputs, settling down to wonder and dialog, at this truer take on the original story. FX was beautiful, mixing hard edge and gauzy, assisting in the act of carrying the scenes, but never becoming the scenes story. Dubbing sounded like english second language Italians, for us an enjoyable choice, adding gravity, and drawing us closer to the hearts in dialog. Accents, and interpretive tones, pause and volume matched to visuals gave another reason to stand and applaud. Of the dozens of beautifully rendered scenes is the closing scenes. The birth of the boy from "the puppet with no strings”, who sought selfish ambition, fell head long into traps, and grew up, comes in a calving cave for lambs, blasted bright as midday sun. This rebirth, after the fairy's declarations, and "powers" is beautifully done, followed by delightful joyous love between father and son. Way cool flick! Seriously symbolic "when the road was full of mud” Dylan - Shelter from the Storm.

I think they did very well. You can change the subtitles to which ever you prefer. It is a little dark. But the ending is lovely.
  • Kids liked the English dub

It’s a great film. I turned on the English dub since the 2 and 4 years old kids can’t read yet or speak Italian and it really wasn’t that bad. Great story and wonderful pace. Some creepy and scary parts are only creepy and scary for adults. Kids love it!
  • English dubbed where??

All in Italian impossible for the kids to keep up with. Other than that okay I guess. I made the assumption it was in English or available to watch in English because of the iTunes description but apparently not.

Some scenes can be disturbing for some children. It feels like someone has made an Italian version of Goosebumps and Are You Afraid of the Dark. It just works wonderfully and scary. Gorgeous cinematography as well!
