Description

Federal Agent Aaron Falk returns to his home town after an absence of over twenty years to attend the funeral of his childhood friend, Luke, who allegedly killed his wife and child before taking his own life -- a victim of the madness that has ravaged this community after more than a decade of drought. When Falk reluctantly agrees to stay and investigate the crime, he opens up an old wound -- the death of 17 year old Ellie Deacon. Falk begins to suspect these two crimes, separated by decades, are connected. As he struggles to prove not only Luke's innocence but also his own, Falk finds himself pitted against the prejudice towards him and pent up rage of a terrified community.

Follows the book pretty well but it’s quite slow and plodding. I did not think it was the author’s best book and the movie was no better.

Kept falling sleep….good acting, that’s about it. Tried to care, couldn’t. Waste of time and money

Nicely paced drama and storyline. Intriguing characters. Bana as ever was excellent. Great scenery and direction. I thought this would be a typical rinse and repeat of similar storylines but the film did a great job of writing its own narrative and left me with a feeling that I’d watch something unique.

This is a solid, poignant film. It's marketed as a thriller, but it's not - it's a straight-up drama with an excellent performance from Eric Bana.

Is it worth a rental watch… if you can’t find anything else! I don’t feel like I wasted my time but it was “dry” slow and a bit boring. Some twists and turns were good but the ending of the movie that solved the biggest crime in the movie didn’t show the perp paying justice so I’m left without the satisfaction of seeing them squirm or die as they should. It just ended with a narrative of the answer. I would not recommend this movie.

The characters are developed. Even side characters aren’t just background props. A community hurting from drought. Anger over something that happened in the past but not the way people think. A man trying to find absolution. An ending showing a truth that no one expected. How far will you go for your best friend. What would you do to resurrect your fathers standing. A story shown through the lense of pain and distrust.

What was a great story written by Jane Harper, the screenwriters of the movie hackneyed a great mystery. Thus sadly, the character development flattened out in the movie. Too bad our loss and a waste of money to rent.
