Description

The cocaine trade of the 70s and 80s had an indelible impact on contemporary Miami. Smugglers and distributors forever changed a once sleepy retirement community into one of the world’s most glamorous hot spots, the epicenter of a $20 billion annual business fed by Colombia’s Medellin cartel. By the early 80s, Miami’s tripled homicide rate had made it the murder capital of the country, for which a Time cover story dubbed the city “Paradise Lost.” With COCAINE COWBOYS, filmmaker Billy Corben – whose first feature Raw Deal: A Question Of Consent, caused a sensation at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival – paints a dazzling portrait of a cultural explosion that still echoes as Hollywood myth, evidenced by the latest manifestation, NBC/Universal’s Miami Vice, opening July 28th. Composer of the original “Miami Vice” theme, Jan Hammer, provides the score.

Good documentary but the footage is extremely blurry, grainy, and pixelated. It was difficult to watch on a large HD TV. Obviously the footage is old, so I doubt much could be done about that, but thought it was important to say since it detracted from the viewing experience. Still a good story though.
  • Most accurate documentary of Miami in the 80s

Billy Corben and the geniuses at Rakontur hit the nail on the head with this documentary about the cocaine trade in Miami in the 80s. Raised in Miami and still residing here since 1970 I remember those crazy days like it was yesterday. Hearing gunshots and seeing bullet riddled bodies on the street became a weekly occurrence. Corben and Spellman captured this era perfectly with just the right mix of archival footage and interviews with the real life players from this fascinating chapter in Miami's history. A must see from the documentary geniuses at Rakontur Films.

Very entertaining! On the edge of my couch for most of it. I had no idea what was behind the whole "Just say no" to drugs Reagan campaign. There are no slow points to this 2 hour movie/documentary. Highly recommend~~!!!!

If you grew up thinking the Discovery Channel made good documentaries you might think this is a great one. There's really no depth to it at all. It's gust a gloss over of events as told by a few insiders. You get no real sense of the impact of cocaine on the culture itself, the repercussions, or in the case of a hit man any sense of morality. It's no Ken Burns, that's for sure.

No need to rent it anyways, you will waste $3 because you are going to buy it right after. I've seen this movie 10 times, bought it twice and about to buy it here and put it on my Ipod. Holla.

How did this become a forum to complain that a movie is not available for rent? You can either buy it or not buy it. That is a choice. You growing up, shouldn't be.
