Description

The tension and terror that is present-day South Africa is powerfully portrayed in director Richard Attenborough's sweeping story of black activist Stephen Biko (Denzel Washington) and a liberal white newspaper editor who risks his own life to bring Biko's message to the world. After learning of apartheid's true horrors through Biko's eyes, editor Donald Woods (Kevin Kline) discovers that his friend has been silenced by the police. Determined not to let Biko's message go unheard, Woods undertakes a perilous quest to escape South Africa and bring Biko's remarkable tale of courage to the world. The riveting, true story offers a stirring account of man at his most evil and most heroic.

I watched this in my geography class and I had gotten very interested in the whole story. I liked the performance from Denzel Washington as Steve Biko he played the part so well I couldn't tell that it was him playing the part. Kevin Kline also played the part of Donald Woods very well he looked exaclty like the real Donald Woods. The musical score was very nice and gave you the feel of Africa. I thought these two actors should of been nominated for their performances because they played their parts very well. I give this movie four stars because how good the acting and the story. Its ashame that this film didn't get a best picture or best screenplay nomination because this is an excellent film one of Denzel's greatest films next to Malcolm X and Training Day, and Kevin Kline's 2nd best film next to Dave. I'd recomend this film if you want to learn about aparthied and this is very educational as well.

I saw this movie in my social studies class while learning about apartheid (racial segragation) and it instantly became my favorite movie. The theme and movie both have an extremely important message, and though this movie is very sad, it is a must see.
  • Denzel Washington is perfect as Steve Biko

This is not only an important movie, but entertaining, as well. My ONLY complaint is that it does not follow the life of Steve Biko as much as I would have liked. The Donald Woods' book, "Biko", the basis for this movie, is much better, but the movie is still a joy (though a sad one) to view.
