This series is reproduced from my own original 1971 poem, The Groovy Pig, the world’s first work of art of a talking sheep manipulated by a soul-searching pig, but, unfortunately, without my permission to anyone and, furthermore, without any acknowledgement or compensation to me until a Penguin Random House employee approves my invoice. Therefore, who at Penguin Random House is already working with me on my brand new The Groovy Pig novel?

I noticed that my than shy 10-month old nephew was drawn into watching the movie Mary Poppins. His ability to remain focused for a long period of time told me that he was understanding what was being shown to him. In contrast cartoons did not seem to have the same ability to arrest his attentions. My own now grown children had the same kind of path in their visual education. As a side note I always laugh to myself when parents (usually mothers) protest young children spending time watching cartoons / movies. If I could only take them to a male college dorm at night. Dudes, it's not movies you need to fear it's video games. Big surprise. Anyways, I don't usually like to give advice on child care because parents usually know their kids best. However, it has been my experience that a huge opportunity is missed by parents not watching movies and shows that their children are interested in viewing. As a parent it is very hard to talk at all to young adults. But, when you use the path of a movie/TV show to Segway into a not often discussed subject of importance,"Voila". Using the camouflage of a visual script as your tool you can brooch the hidden world 2 to 20.... Sorry to go so long. Long story short my Nephew loves "Babe" and we all know about the not so hidden messages in "Babe". Do spend the time to find those wonderful moving visuals with vocals oops called movies. It is a gift to the young folks in your lives that will forever be giving to them. On word, to "Little Shop of Horrors" or "PeeWee Playhouse" which my own daughter loved and throw David in there with "Labyrinth". Create your own pathways of memories. I still get excited with happy when the Disney theme song plays hopefully followed by our boy Winnie the Pooh...enjoy

You can’t get any better than this. There’re some real life themes that may upset very young kids, but you can’t ask for a better fable. It does subject kids to subjects like life and death, but it resolves them without disappointment. It’s a perfect movie.
  • Beautiful, Heartwarming Film

This is a somewhat childish film (it is aimed primarily at kids), but it's a heartwarming drama that is worth looking at nonetheless. While most of the pigs lived in a dark world and spent their lives waiting for "Pig Paradise" (aka death), one piglet got lucky when Farmer Hoggett wins him at a county fair. The piglet is given the name "Babe" and soon desires to become a sheepdog. The sentimental nature of this film mad it a hit with critics and audiences, resulting in it becoming one of only two kids' films of the 1990's to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture (the other was Disney's "Beauty and the Beast").
