Description

Academy Award®-winner Russell Crowe leads an all-star cast, including Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams & Helen Mirren in the gripping thriller about deception, manipulation & corruption. When D.C. Reporter Cal McCaffrey (Crowe) is assigned to investigate the murder of an assistant to an up-and-coming politician (Affleck), he uncovers a conspiracy that threatens to bring down the nation's power structures. In a town of spin-doctors and wealthy power brokers, he will discover one truth: when fortunes are at stake, no one's integrity, love or life is safe. From director Kevin Macdonald of The Last King of Scotland, State of Play brings together strong performances, riveting suspense and is "sophisticated, intelligent and powerful" (Shawn Edwards, Fox-TV).

Plot was good, script left too many dull edges, direction missed and the characters were left to their own devices. Typical American film. All the pieces were there. It just wasn't important to Producers and Director to make it excellent.

I love how unpredictable the ending came out.

Russell Crow is too old to be cast as Ben Affleck's former college roommate. Robin Wright is too old to be cast as Ben Affleck's wife. Helen Mirren should have passed this one up or at least have made an attempt at an American accent as does Crow. (A British editor at an American, D.C.-based newspaper? Come on.) Male reporters are typecast as being overweight and grungy. Where else can I go with this? It did not hold my interest. There was no chemistry between any of the characters. The "killer" character is not even scary--he looks too much like Ray Romano. Why all of the 5 stars and hoopla???? Thank goodness I only spent $3.99!

Well written, well acted. These are the best kind of roles for Crowe. And Affleck needs more of this.
  • Slow

Found myself wondering when it was going to end. Fair amount of action but the film seemed to drag on. Might seem trivial, but Crowe's character and Affleck's character were roommates in college? Crowe looked at least ten years older than Affleck. Sorry Russell.

A lot of twist and turns. Good cast. I would recommend this movie.
