Description

Barbie magically comes to life in this modern adaptation of the E.T.A. Hoffmann classic. The tale begins when Barbie, playing the role of Clara, receives a beautiful wooden Nutcracker as a gift from her favorite Aunt. That night, while Clara sleeps, the Nutcracker springs to life to ward off the evil Mouse King who has invaded Clara’s parlor. She awakes and aids the Nutcracker, but the Mouse King shrinks her by casting an evil spell. Clara and the Nutcracker set off on a spectacular adventure to find the Sugarplum Princess, the only one who can break the Mouse King’s evil enchantment. The tale is enhanced with spectacular dance scenes created by the acclaimed choreographer Peter Martins, and features the beloved music by Tchaikovsky. The real-life movements of dancers from the New York City Ballet bring the beauty of ballet to the screen in a way never seen before. Barbie in The Nutcracker shows that, if you are kind, clever and brave, anything is possible…

This has always been the best version of the nutcracker besides live ballet.

You probably think that no matter what Barbie movie there, it’s automatically going to be bad. To my surprise, I actually really enjoy it even to this day. I know I probably like it more because I saw it and loved it as a child, but it’s still generally good. Somehow, they made the story of The Nutcracker fun to watch despite having very little ballet in it. Definitely a holiday classic.

When thinking of Barbie Movies, most people think that it's a distraction for 3-7 year olds so that their parents can have an hour to themselves. While that is true for the more recent Barbie movies, the classic ones such as The Nutcracker are more interesting and doesn't bore parents to sleep if they watch it with their kid. I remember watching this when I was very little around Christmas and loved it dearly. This past Christmas I had revisited it and had nostalgia rush over me. But I still enjoyed it. It wasn't cheesy or slow. And the design for the Mouse King is still utterly terrifying, and that says alot coming from a high school student that isn't freaked out or scared easily. So if you're a parent who has a kid who loves Barbie and wants to watch this movie (and borderline forces you to watch with them) I completely recommend this!
  • I ❤️ this movie!

I've surpassed the "appropriate" age to watch Barbie movies, yet these oldies never ceased to fuel my inner childhood needs. I always think about this particular movie when Christmas is around the corner. And I am always thankful to my parents for nurturing my younger years with these awesome storytelling films!
