Been a fan of washed out since ‘Within and Without’, which is one of my favorite summer albums ever. The album and that cover art are classic. This album probably eclipses it. Reminds me of five star hotel pools on the rooftop of Asia-Pacific while on business trips. Just takes me back to that relaxing space near a pool kicking some chill tunes. Bucket list is to see Washed Out on tour.

Beautiful mellow songwriting with a hint of reggae and 80s stylings.

Purple Noon didn’t really do much for me as Greene’s other records have. The first three tracks are pretty solid (I think Too Late is probably the best song on the record). I did enjoy his putting instruments and rhythms he hadn’t really used prior in this record. However, I felt like most of the songs, especially in the middle of the album all sounded the same melodically and didn’t really go anywhere. Some did get me head boppin a bit, especially Don’t Go and Haunt. Felt like to me, at least as far as with the melodies, that he was trying to get back to his old sound. I think he may have tried too hard though.
  • Now my 2nd favorite Washed Out

I was introduced to chillwave a few years after its inception via the theme song to 'Portlandia' ("Feel It All Around"). That album, 'Life of Leisure', became an instant favorite and still my favorite Washed Out. However, the songs are somewhat abrupt. After buying pretty much every album, my now 3rd (formerly 2nd) favorite is 'High Times', a promising but somewhat incomplete-sounding collection of various sounds veering into island music/ calypso and '60s British northern soul. However, what draws me to the work is the relaxing drone of human mumble backing a rush of Miami-esque trance. Thus, 'Purple Noon' has so far dominated my August 2020, especially while driving. The songs are vaguely interchangeable, long format and the lyrics barely comprehensible. For ambient music while working at a desk or even napping, these qualities are ideal. Kind of the modern equivalent of classical. I remember when visiting my intellectual uncle and aunt growing up, they kept a very quiet, studious home of polished wood floors, reed diffusers, oil candles and a 300-disc CD changer of non-stop classical serenity. Albums like 'Purple Noon' are sort of a hipper upgrade for the parties millenials like to throw with less synth and better modeling of sounds and effects than the electronica of yesteryear.

Ernest this is your B E S T album yet! The word ETHEREAL comes to mind...extremely delicate and light in a way that seems TOO PERFECT FOR THIS WORLD. The world has been in need of one good thing from the year that is 2020. THIS ALBUM IS THAT THING.
