  • My favorite text editor

I use Ulysses mainly for crafting posts for my Ghost blog. It's a delightful piece of software. The only issue I have with it is the unreliability of the sync.

Its a nice app with a good looking UI. I'd say the one thing keeping it from being an alternative for Scrivener in my option is that Ulyssess is subscription based and I can get a perpetual license for Scrivener. I'd rather pay once and be done.
  • Excellent lightweight Scrivener alternative

So far I'm loving Ulysses. At first it was frustrating to use, but once you figure out the learning curve, it's really nice to use. My favorite parts are that it's lightweight, feature-rich syncs everything via iCloud, has built-in spellchecker, allows for the easiest PDF export I have ever used, keeps tons of backups in the background by default, and lets you adjust the visual aesthetic so the Markdown is less noticeable, if you wish - among other things. I did notice a not-insignficiant amount of bugs, several of which forced me to cmd q and restart (the app freezes when I upload 3,000 words of text, or the icons get all messed up when resizing library windows). I also noticed that iCloud is strangely slow when uploading, compared to other apps I use via iCloud. It seems like Ulysses waits a little bit to upload changes, unlike Bear or Notes where those changes are more or less instant. Not a huge deal, but noticeable. I also think Ulysses should give an option to hide Markdown completely like Bear since I'm not a fan of seeing it while writing. Other than that, I'm happy with it. $39.99 a year to support the continual development seems reasonable, and I'm always happy when I see frequent updates in the changelog. I also like the Ulysses lets you have multiple free trials if you're not sold. This is probably the third or fourth time I've come back, and this time it clicked and I decided to become a subscriber. Great job Ulysses devs!
  • Ulysses is my solution to text

I could not recommend Ulysses any more. I started just using it for basic notes, but it soon absorbed many of my text-based chores and became a creative and inspirational writing tool. Now, everything that requires text - basically everything do - starts and often finishes in Ulysses. Thanks for a brilliant application!

Easy backups that work flawlessly. Perfect syncing on multiple devices. Connect research to projects and write without a million useless choices.

I love Ulysses. Been using it for a larger writing project. While it’s the best at leveraging iCloud sync out of all the apps I’ve tried, it shares some of the same sync issues. Sometimes, iCloud just fails to upload for some reason. It gets hung up… I’ll have to restart my phone or computer to fix it. Just worth noting. I wish Apple did a better job at it Edit: one glitch that I think is a bug with Ulysses itself: if I make any edit on my Mac and then open up Ulysses on my iPhone, it looks like it redownloads everything. Everything is empty and freezes on “Downloading.” Even tags will be the wrong color as it all filters in, as if for the first time. This happens multiple times a day if I switch between devices. Strange.

I was looking for a "filing cabinet" for loose odds and ends I would find now and then when I ran across someone's glowing commentary on Ulysses. I use it to "file" ideas, articles, short or lengthy text files ect. It also became my preferred macOS text editor for my own compositions. Solid performance, any extra feature you could really want. Try it and you will not regret it.

Ulysses is a sleeper app that has a built in editor and is very simple to write without interruption. I get better text and then edit and move to my end location (or leave in Ulysses). Way under appreciated as a notes and writting app.
