From indispensable travel companion to digital dumpster fire

There was a time when iOverlander was genuinely great. Up-to-date information, useful locations, and a community of travelers sharing the kind of knowledge that made finding somewhere to lay your head on the road considerably less of a hassle.
Then, somewhere along the way, things went tits up.
The information is increasingly outdated or misleading, and many of the spots that made the app worthwhile have been closed, trashed, or otherwise ruined by the general public. Because apparently, humans are incapable of enjoying a good thing without destroying it.
Meanwhile, the app itself has become a hassle to use. Logging in, navigating the interface, dealing with advertising, and paying for features that once made this thing useful have somehow become the primary experience.
It’s a shame. iOverlander used to solve a problem. Now it feels like the problem.
I genuinely hope the people who built this thing managed to make a few bucks before it all went sideways. They created something useful, and it’s disappointing to watch it become another example of a good idea slowly strangled by monetization, bureaucracy, and the inevitable march of human stupidity.

Free versions SPAMS annoying ads non stop - I’d be inclined to subscribe but adamantly refuse due to the almost blackmail occurring in the free version. Sell on Value NOT annoyance!!

Took one of the best apps on the market and truly ruined it with the relaunch. I’ve used it now for over a year and paid for it multiple times it has lost its user-friendly capabilities.
It’s very hard to plan using the app as the landmarks disappear if you’re too zoomed in or out. Cities are no longer clearly marked.
I don’t know if there is a better app out there but IOverlander has definitely opened the door for someone to make one.
Great for VanLife thank you

Their old app was easy and great. This new one is difficult and frustrating
Missing miles of scenery trying to find a campsite.

Why would I ever use this app when I can just use any regular map app? Charging for premium to download offline maps defeats the entire purpose. If I have service and internet, I don’t need this app. Guess i’ll try Organic Maps

We have used a few different apps for finding camp spots but none are as easy as iOverlander
We just did a road trip from San Diego through Canada n Alaska. IOverlander gave us the information we wanted to find great outdoor places.
Love it !
Greedy terrible app

This app used to be free, it’s clear that they hate their user base and have been making the app worse at every opportunity for years now
Winner…

For most first use screen spams — take it as a red flag to walk away — it’s a trap.
Ruined App

I used the OG app for lots of adventures. Loved it. After some time away from traveling I opened it back up to version 2. I’m seriously disappointed in the app. WAY over priced for how clunky this app is now. It’s been ruined for the pursuit of money. What used to feel grassroots and user cultivated now feels gross and dirty. The money didn’t even make the user interface better. Will not recommend any longer. Thank you for ruining what used to be the best app for traveling.
