Its a really neat app but it gets pricey after awhile having to buy every single document.
  • After 10 years, I’m leaving Ancestry for good!!!

After ten years of loyalty, I'm fed up with Ancestry's latest move. They've started slapping charges on services that were once free, like: - Shared Matches (you can only see top 3 matches now!) - Surnames in Matches’ Trees - GONE! - Birthplaces in Matches’ Trees - GONE! - Preview of DNA Match’s Trees (up to 7 Generations) - GONE! - Seeing Common Ancestors - GONE! - ThruLines - GONE! - Access to Public Trees and Trees Invited To - GONE! It's outrageous! They're betraying their customers by abandoning the very features that drew us in initially.
  • App Doesn’t Have Half the Features You Need

I have used this app extensively, and am considered an expert level genealogy hobbyist. I want to love this app, I really do. It has tons of promise, and the interface is pretty nice. And that’s why I’m giving it two stars (full disclosure, I started with giving one, but it’s not all bad. It could be even be great … but only if Ancestry tried even a little). My problem is that Ancestry almost never actually supports the features on the iOS app. Don’t even bother searching an FAQ - it doesn’t apply to app users. As in, it NEVER, ever applies. And whatever you do, do NOT contact support. In my most recent chat I asked, “is this a live person?” and waited 30 seconds to receive, “I’ll have to check on that.” (She checked and then claimed she was. Sure you are, “Jeanine”). Seriously, I’ve never spent less than 45 minutes with them, and the end result is always the same: finally someone realizes that not one tip they’ve given me will help on the app. And then blah-blah-blah, they thank me for being a member. To be clear: I pay for EVERYTHING, to the tune of hundreds and hundreds of dollars a year. They should be thanking me. There is no feature or upgrade that I don’t pay for. You’d think that Ancestry would prioritize keeping suckers like me happy, because our constant subscribing keeps them in business. But you’d be wrong. My most recent debacle? Paying $10/month to subscribe to their “pro tools” feature - a feature they deployed over 4 months ago. Not only is it still not supported, but no one at support can even give a rough estimate for when it *might* become available on the app. They are still happy to keep billing me in the interim, though. So sure, use this app if you, like me, use your iPhone pro max as your computer, so you have no other choice. Use this app if you are so dedicated to genealogy that you have no other choice. It’s not as pretty, but it’s a lot better than the flashy, style-over-substance 23&Me app. But be warned of its limits: you won’t be able to do half the things that other users can do, and no one will even tell you that straight out. Nope, instead you’ll waste hours on weird corners of Reddit, and then more hours on some insane support chat. And that’s how it goes, even when you LEAD your questions with, “I’m using the iOS app,” and repeat it every 4 sentences. Even then, no one will ever realize that’s the problem for a minimum of 45 minutes. Good times. If I were even a little less into genealogy, I’d uninstall it out of fury. Instead I’ll probably just go pound a shot of hard liquor and yell at my husband and kids over something unrelated. Hopefully you’ll fare better than I have! Better yet, hopefully the geniuses at Ancestry will realize that a massive number of people actually use their ultra-powerful iPhones as their computers, so maybe they should actually contemplate SUPPORTING the app they developed. Or at least maybe they’ll stop lying about what you’re paying for, every single time they announce some great new feature. I’m not holding my breath, though.

  • Multiple device research

I love being able to switch between all of my devices as I am working on family research. I might start one project on the Chromebook, but then switch to iPad to finish looking at a source, as I decide if is a viable resource reference for each relative.
  • Worthless

This app becomes more worthless every day. Now you cannot save obituaries from newspapers.com to Ancestry even though you have membership in both Ancestry and Newspapers.com. Totally worthless.
