It’s taken awhile to get used to the differences between Excel and Numbers but when there is a complete break from Microsoft, it’s “do or die”. Luckily for me, there is a bunch of information out there to help make the transition. I hardly ever have to do a search on “how do i….”

Much more intuitive than Excel. At least to me.

If you don’t PowerQuery or Pivot tables, Numbers is a good alternative. I have been using for last few years and the application has incrementally improved. It is my to go spreadsheet.
  • Better than I’d hoped

With Office 365 upping its pricing, I decided to try out Numbers to replace Excel. While Numbers is missing some things I’m used to and does quite a few things differently, it’s certainly capable enough for my needs. These are, admittedly, rather modest compared to some. It’s far more capable than I remember from my last look, which was probably ten years back at this point. It feels smoother and more modern than Excel, I like the look better, and I can do without what’s missing which is mostly cosmetic. It imports Excel files quite readily and accurately, which makes the transition pretty easy. And I am switching. I thought of Office 365 as a bargain, but the excuse that Co-Pilot, which I absolutely do not need demands a higher price is nonsense. Goodbye Microsoft.
  • Harder Workflow Since Update

Not sure which update made the change. But now when you open the app or click on it in the dock, the Choose a Template window appears. This is a step backward in workflow usability. The designers here seem to believe that users only use Numbers to create new worksheets. If you want to open an existing spreadsheet, you have to click file/open or cmd + O. Prior versions opened a special Finder window in the app’s default folder with all my spreadsheet there to choose from. A New Document button at the bottom of that window allowed for one click to get to the Choose Template (or just start a new one depending on setting options). This is a great app that gets more functionality all the time. It’s too bad the designers feel the need to change things just for the sake of changing them. They have taken away great workflow process and replaced it with one that offers extra steps and no benefit that I can see.

It is clear that a tremendous amount of work went into this product. It’s suits most of my needs. I would like to see an often commented on issue of the inability to freeze the horizontal movement of the sheet. I can get headers, columns and rows to work for me but can’t seem to get the sheet to stop horizontal scrolling. I have searched and searched for years to no avail about why this feature isn’t implemented.
