    I’m studying a 2nd language and I use this app every day—many times a day. It’s great, but it can also be detrimental to learning. Sometimes you just want to know if a sentence or phrase makes sense and is grammatically correct. The translation toggle will make corrections, but it will also change the sentence, the verb, the word order, and even the meaning. If you’re working with a verb, it always changes the verb to something more appropriate—according to the translator. For new learners this can be really defeating and frustrating. I realize that this is not the intended use case. It really can’t be relied upon in the learning environment (even voice recognition can be sketchy on the most simplest words). To function correctly it seems to want more context, which is understandable, but for quick checks trying to accommodate this need can put you out in the weeds. It can be useful if you don’t use the toggle, but then you don’t get the benefit of the correction feature. AI chat tools are much more useful and reliable. GT is a really good translation tool. Learners use with care.

    Come on Google, fix this app. It isn’t intuitive, it often gets the context wrong. 90% of the time it puts periods or commas in the wrong place. Put some of the Gemini intelligence to work on this app. It isn’t worthy of Google. I just downloaded Microsoft’s app. It is far superior.

  • It’s okay but there’s better

    It used to be pretty good but lately I’ve noticed it will either completely get something wrong or completely miss the important nuances of a different language, often leading to confusion when you’re talking to someone in a different language and need to translate often. I don’t recommend, there’s better ones out there

  • History not easy to see in main screen anymore

    The previous UI has a much easier way to access the history and to switch languages back and foward when clicking in the history items right the way. They have overcomplicated the process now to see the history, requiring more clicks and switching screens… I personally have such a worse experience now in the newer version compared to the previous versions and the older UI…

  • Great app with one flaw

    The app been really useful over the years as an immigrant, but one thing has frustrated me for a long time. When you go into the photo translate mode, there are no arrows that would just switch two languages around like it’s done in the text translation page. Dear Google, bilingual people forget/don’t know words in both languages sometimes so we have to switch them around often. Also when you try to translate “middle school” from English to Russian, it for some reason turns middle school into high school lol

    I don’t like the current version. I use conversation function, and the version I used 3 months ago was much better. I like the old version that I can type and make corrections on the script

  • Buggy or poorly designed code

    This app works about 87% of the time. There are times when I want to translate and it says no connection. My phone is connected both cellular and Wi-Fi. Very, strike that, extremely frustrating. When it works, it works well. It often forces me to use a different translator that has fewer features. But if it’s not gonna work the features don’t matter.
