  • I will not support the valuing of AI over actual humans.

I liked Duolingo and have used it for a few years, and planned for use it for years longer. Likely would’ve even put money into it, but I will NOT pay AI and corporate greed. This is sickening and disappointing, and I will not be using Duolingo again, nor will anyone I know. There are other, better language apps that actually care about humans rather than their pockets.

I started Duolingo over a year ago and used the family plan so my family could prepare for a trip to Italy. I had intended to use it for six months and then cancel, and hopefully get a prorated refund. Absolutely not possible, they do not allow any refunds of a time subscription, don’t bother. Whatever, since the one year subscription was non-cancelable, I’ve continued using it and I feel like I’m actually learning, but this app’s lesson style will never get me to being comfortable having a conversation in another language. My complaint: I’ve noticed in the last couple of weeks that several changes were made which force you to do a paid subscription to access features that were previously free. It’s gotten to the point that you can’t even try for the gold level on a lesson you’ve completed without spending the in game currency which, you guessed it, you have to buy with cash if you want to have enough to make progress. Want to review your mistakes or practice a concept that you had trouble with, which you could do with the free access in the past and was a good way to use the app even if you only have two minutes to spare? Can’t do it if you don’t have a paid subscription. That, and being forced to watch ads when I complete a lesson, and being subjected to MULTIPLE ads for their free trial of the Super subscription every time I sign in to the app, have finally become enough to make me not want to use this app. I have a 400+ day streak, and I’m quitting the app because they’re becoming overwhelmingly focused on monetization.

I can not support duo or ever suggest it to anyone for language learning especially not after the new direction the company was turned towards with AI. Support humans instead or go to your local library.
