I wish they had different types of Spanish instead of just Spaniard Spanish. The area I live in has mostly Central American people and that’s the kind I would like to learn.

I find that thanks to Duo Lingo I’m learning to read and write in Portuguese. As well as learn general vocabulary. Thanks to Duo Lingo I can generally read a menu at a restaurant. Unfortunately, I’m not learning to comprehend or speak Portuguese. I can’t order food at a restaurant or understand a server. Another callout, it’s teaching me Brazilian Portuguese not European Portuguese which is a stress-timed language rather than syllable-timed (like Brazilian Portuguese). I need to learn both. Additionally, the pronunciations on Duo Lingo aren’t always easy to hear and according to my Brazilian bf, awful. He also complains that it scores me as correct when I pronounce something wrong. Like he says I say massa for maçã and it accepts it. I’ve compared Duo Lingo to Busuu and I feel Duo Lingo is better for practicing vocabulary by gamifying word comprehension. But Busuu seems better for actually learning to speak and comprehend a language. What’s nice about Duo Lingo is I can use it at times of the day when I don’t have the mental capacity to truly practice a language. Busuu I feel I need to sit down with intention to use. So it’s easier to be consistent with Duo Lingo and it helps me feel less intimidated by Busuu. Both apps leave me wanting.

I have enjoyed this app so much that I purchased the “max” subscription and it has been worth it’s weight in gold. I’ve learned so much and have been able to apply it day to day. I love duolingo! However, what keeps it from being a 5/5 rating is some of the scummy/scammy challenges. Many of the timed challenges are literally impossible to beat without purchasing time boosts. I can match them faster than the app draws them, and it’s still far from fast enough to beat it without spending extra money, on top of my “max” sub. You can not match them faster, as the app doesn’t draw the options on the screen fast enough to choose them. That really leaves a bad taste in my mouth and ruins an otherwise good experience. I’m already spending a ton of money, and the shady tactics to try and bleed a few more coins out of me discourages me from even wanting to use the app at points. Challenges should not be impossible to accomplish. Very difficult, that’s fine, but making it actually impossible without micro transactions? It’s shameful.

  • Too many ads

Haven’t used the app in a few years and it’s definitely become a lot more geared towards buying and spending “gems” or whatever which distracts from the actual learning. And there are way too many ads. There were none before. Wish the original vision wouldn’t get lost to profits.
