iPhone users (at least on the Pacific Crest Trail right now) have been having a terrible time FOR OVER A MONTH trying to use their maps. FarOut continues to blame an Apple update, but no other map application is having this problem except them. It seems to only happen if I attempt to look for cell phone service, get none, and the app is running in the background. Feels like they aren’t fetching data in a standard way if an update only broke their map (nor other map apps).
  • Backpacking Essential

Consider this app a Thru Hike essential. It keeps you on trail, highlights best views, water sources, towns, hostels, memorials, and most every other piece of info a hiker needs! Works using GPS with no cell service. Love it!
  • Current PCT Hiker 2023. Terrible Reliability

Word on the trail and my personal experience with this app on the PCT in 2023 is that this app absolutely cannot be relied on for your only navigation source. The map frequently disappears while zooming in to look at detail, and the comments are non existent most of the time. It goes through periods of flawless performance, only to disappoint with disappearing features shortly after. After repeated attempts of re installing the app and, contacting customer support I will no longer trust this app to navigate while Thru Hiking. Far Out, Please fix this. Your namesake is losing credibility quickly. I am not the only one experiencing this problem.

I don’t know any thru hikers or committed section hikers of the major trails that do not use this app. The fact that hikers can post comment on the flow of water sources it’s self is worth the price.
  • Great idea but terrible app and interface

I’ve been hiking the PCT using this app for its intended purpose. It has all the information you need, however it’s rarely accessible. The app itself constantly crashes in GPS mode, or often won’t load. I originally thought it was operator error, but after talking at camp it seems to be a common issue amongst others. Don’t waste your money. There’s other apps and guides out there that offer the same information and get the job done but aren’t interactive.
  • Offline Maps Don’t Work

On our iPhones, the offline maps, despite being downloaded for offline use, only allowed zooming in while connected. Not very helpful on the AZT, had to supplement with Gaia and Avenza.
  • Zero Maps

My experience with the FarOut app has not been good. I was on a 200 mile hike in Virginia and when I absolutely needed the maps from the app the most and zoomed in to get even the most remedial details, I got zero topo details and only icons of things of value. It was entirely pointless as I had no visibility on trails or elevation to get there. I emailed FarOut and haven’t heard a peep.
