    They’re trying to harvest the real-world IP addresses of their users, so they’ve intentionally designed Perplexity’s web version to glitch out and stop updating during the research phase whenever a user is connected via VPN. And to make matters worse, this dedicated MacOS app is poorly optimized and uses 20% of a CPU thread at all times. Not. Cool.

  • Great App, But Needs Persistent Settings

    main frustration is having to re-toggle my preferences (sources) every time I reopen the app. It doesn’t remember my last-used settings, which interrupts the workflow and feels like a step back from the seamless experience I get on the browser. Also, while the app is handy, the browser version still feels more complete and intuitive. The layout, speed, and overall functionality are slightly better on desktop. Still, this is a great app with huge potential, and I hope future updates focus on improving consistency and feature parity with the web experience.

    With all the success and fame, the developers behind Perplexity have become super greedy. They are limiting the features, giving poor quality of service to pro subscribers, forcing them to upgrade for ten times more payment in the form of Perplexity Max. Absolutely petty of them to nickel and dime people who helped them grow and become the multi-billion-dollar valuation that they now are. Hope to see them back on the ground soon.

    I use Perplexity for two main purposes. 1) Translate Yiddish or Hebrew documents into English. I verify the translations with the author. The translations are excellent. 2) I ask Perplexity for hints with math olympiad problems. Very helpful. I conclude with this. Google Search tells me where to look for answers. Perplexity gives me answers.

  • Perplexity is a useful AI tool for biomedical research

    This AI is one of the better ones for specific needs related to biomedical research. I love that it can find citations for me and provide them; however, you have to be careful. I've seen it completely fabricate paper titles with topic and findings and then when I asked for the specific citation, it admitted that it didn't exist. That's a major flaw of this program.
