Description

What's that bird? Ask Merlin—the world’s leading app for birds. Just like magic, Merlin Bird ID will help you solve the mystery. Merlin Bird ID helps you identify birds you see and hear. Merlin is unlike any other bird app—it's powered by eBird, the world’s largest database of bird sightings, sounds, and photos. Merlin offers four fun ways to identify birds. Answer a few simple questions, upload a photo, record a singing bird, or explore birds in a region. Whether you’re curious about a bird you’ve seen once or you’re hoping to identify every bird you can find, the answers are waiting for you with this free app from the renowned Cornell Lab of Ornithology. WHY YOU’LL LOVE MERLIN • Expert ID tips, range maps, photos, and sounds help you learn about the birds you spot and build birding skills. • Discover a new bird species each day with your own personalized Bird of the Day • Get customized lists of birds you can find where you live or travel - anywhere in the world! • Keep track of your sightings—build your personal list of the birds you find MACHINE LEARNING MAGIC • Powered by Visipedia, Merlin Sound ID and Photo ID uses machine learning to identify birds in photos and sounds. Merlin learns to recognize bird species based on training sets of millions of photos and sounds collected by birders at eBird.org, archived in the Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. • Merlin delivers the most accurate results thanks to experienced birders, who curate and annotate sightings, photos, and sounds, who are the true magic behind Merlin. AMAZING CONTENT • Merlin has bird photos, songs, and calls, and identification help for anywhere in the world, including Mexico, Costa Rica, South America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, India, Australia, Korea, Japan, China, and more. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s mission is to interpret and conserve the Earth’s biological diversity through research, education, and citizen science focused on birds and nature. We are able to offer Merlin for free thanks to the generosity of Cornell Lab members, supporters, and citizen-science contributors.

What the title says. Randomly downloaded it while on a hike because I was curious about the birds around me. A little over a year later and I use the app daily. I am so much more aware of the nature around me and I am a much happier person because of it. Thank you merlin and Cornell!!

I use this app often no matter where I am! I’m love how it helps identify all the birds I see!
  • Not loving the update

I’m not loving the recent update and change of format in Merlin Bird ID. Sound recordings are no longer automatically saved. This takes added time to review and save. Letter is larger and annoying. THE APP RUNS SO SLOW. Takes forever to pull up recordings when double checking what was heard. Please fix this!! It was great the way it was…

Merlin Bird ID is an absolutely awesome mobile app!! It works great, it’s without fail thus far (never a single UI bug across years of use), and the biggest thing - it’s free and without ads. Ugh, we love to see it; don’t we? It nice to have some technology in our lives that augments/deepens our experience in nature, not supplants it.

Merlin was my gateway into birding. I learned birds in my area so much faster than I expected because of all the identification tools! Now I’m obsessed with birding! It’s like pokemonGO for birds! Lol
  • Last update - big loss

I’ve been using Merlin for years. I have loved it. Some of my favorite travel souvenirs are recorded soundtracks. The last update includes a significant, unflagged change. Sound files no longer save automatically. If you don’t hit the save button, they are lost. What is very frustrating is that this change was not communicated. So, several recordings from this morning, that included birds I’ve not heard before are lost. Please restore the auto save, or add a setting that allows users to choose. But in any case please communicate.

I used this app once to identify a bird sound and it would not stop playing it. I even deleted the app and the sound kept going!
  • One of my favorites!

This app is amazing. It is pretty accurate when I am able to confirm visually, and I love teaching my son about all the birds we see. I’m able to identify some birds by ear, and now, so can he. 11/10 would recommend!
  • Love Merlin—can’t believe it’s free
