  • Unfortunately ruined and stale

Unfortunately it was ruined and and is stale. Was a great app with really special features. But the developer hugely underestimated the quality of the rewrite in 2024 and the app has never recovered. There are many obvious bugs. The developer is non responsive. In 10 years has never once replied to a bug report or feature request sent to his overcast email.
  • So far not good at core function

I want to love this app but it’s not doing its primary job of grabbing new episodes. I just moved over from Downcast and love a lot about the features but if I can’t get new episodes what’s the point. 😖
  • Downloads fail very frequently

Idk if it’s a recent update or what, but my downloads are always failing. This app also takes up a lot of storage space with very limited options for controlling how your podcasts are downloaded/deleted. I also frequently do not see podcast episodes from my private feed and only find out they exist through other sources.
  • Still the best, and still bug-ridden.

This is still the best podcast player I have used to date. That said, it infuriates me that last year the developer dropped a major update on his customers, full of tons of new bugs, and has failed to address or even publicly acknowledge them months later. Furthermore, he is incredibly tone deaf when he talks about Sonos dropping a buggy major revamp on their customers, and how Apple is unresponsive to their customers and developers who submit bugs. I am okay with the new version but would have happily stuck with last year’s if there was any way to do so. It wasn’t broken. It is now.

  • Learning curve, but now obsessed

I was skeptical after using Apple Podcasts for so long but I wanted the ability to create playlists. I definitely had to learn how to use this app, and some of it wasn’t exactly intuitive. I’m never going back. Obsessed. Keep telling everyone to switch. I love podcasts again! Thank you, overcast people!!
  • Re-write

Man, the re-write was a mistake & since then it has been fully abandoned. Super sad since I used to use this daily and kept hoping for it to get better.
  • Must Manually Delete Played Episodes

Overcast will apparently now keep old episodes around literally forever if you don't play them all the way to the end, including all credits, advertisements, etc. The downloaded episode limit apparently doesn't even apply, and if you've exceeded that limit, you get only a single new episode at any one time for the podcast. Because there's no setting to tell Overcast that you'd rather delete "in progress" episodes than a newer one that you haven't played. The moment a new episode is downloaded, the immediate previous one is instantly deleted, regardless of your other settings. This is ridiculous and completely misunderstands how people use the app. Normally I simply use a list of all downloaded episodes listed chronologically, which offers no way to even see this happening, aside from recently downloaded episodes disappearing mysteriously. Apparently I'm expected to sort through dozens of podcasts manually and cull old episodes where I stopped listening before the last few seconds — which is nearly everything I've ever listened to. I had tens of gigabytes of space wasted to storage of episodes I had already completed that should have been deleted months ago. What I want when I set, say, a 10 episode limit is to keep the 10 most recent episodes, regardless of whether I've "finished" listening or not. It's hard to imagine why anyone would ever want to keep around a half finished, months old episode. Not to mention, the app is slow, crashes or just freaks out frequently on Car Play, and is just generally not that reliable after updates well over a year ago. These issues have never been fixed. Seems all the developer does these days is increase the subscription price and ignore glaring flaws with the way the app is designed. No doubt what I've described above is "intended behavior". I would switch back to Apple Podcasts in an instant, with one exception. Apparently Apple Podcasts now locks older episodes of certain podcasts behind a paywall. Episodes which are freely downloadable anywhere else. Which is equally ridiculous.

Overcast is by far the easiest app for me to manage my favorite podcasts. Thanks for keeping it simple and user friendly!
  • Was the best, now terrible

Very buggy. When getting an announcement or alert from another app while listening to podcast, overcast rewinds back 20 minutes. So annoying. Never did that before.
