  • Episode Limits

Why did they change episode limits? Who was asking for this to be strictly enforced? Now I can’t use this option and either use a ton of space OR lose true extra episodes I manually downloaded. I other than that it has been great for years. Will seal out a better option now.

Playlists can now be sorted by episode duration????!!! I’m tempted to unsubscribe and then resubscribe just to give this app more of my money.
  • Strict Episode Limit & Developer Hubris

Marco, if you’re going to lean on Claude to code your app, you have enough time to make thoughtful decisions on feature roll-out. Instead, you released a strict episode limit that breaks longstanding functionality and user behavior. Your rollout was user-hostile and destructive of users’ playlists, podcast settings, and good will. You would have absolutely roasted Tim Cook for a decision like this. I’ve been an Overcast user since launch because I believed it’s best-in-class, but the negligence and hubris of this rollout resonates with the increasing out-of-touch perspective you bring to ATP.

What used to be a great app has been junked up with premium upsells and AI features. Let me turn this stuff off.
  • Forced data loss

The new version’s episode limit behavior is a no-win for anyone who used it as-intended previously — on first launch of the new version I’m forced to either delete all 100+ episodes I manually downloaded, or unilaterally wipe out all the soft limits I deliberately set per show: both are forms of data loss and there’s no option to simply retain the app’s previous behavior. I painstakingly set the per show limits so automatic downloads wouldn’t accumulate on their own but I could still manually add episodes beyond the automatic limit when I wanted; this was how this core feature was designed and telegraphed so it’s how I trusted it to work; I saw nothing wrong with that and it should have at least been retained as an option. Instead I have to choose which of my work Overcast will delete before I can use the app again. Bad experience and a betrayal of user expectations for sure.

I was an “early adopter” of podcast listening and have used many players over the years but I have found that this one has the best user interface and is so intuitive! Everything I want to customize is easy to find. Marco is the sole proprietor and I love that I can support a small business for pennies per day, especially when it’s an excellent product! Thanks Marco!

  • Disappointing updates

So often an update ruins my experience. The latest one deletes in progress episodes when a new episode is available (connected to my episode limits). I understand people may expect a limit to be a rigid rule but come on. Who wants the episode they are listening to randomly deleted?
  • Unusable after update

After the latest update I find the app unusably sluggish. How can I revert to the old version?
  • Why did you make episode limits so strict

This is still my favorite podcast app, but you made a frustrating change that's forcing me to rework my download habits. Strictly enforcing episode limits means that if I want to binge a bunch of old episodes of a podcast, I have to disable the episode limit feature. But disabling the episode limit feature means that new episodes will keep automatically downloading and taking up more space until I remember to go back and re-enable the episode limit. I really preferred the old method where manually selecting episodes to download exempted them from the episode limit. It sounds like the crowd asked for this feature change for some reason.
