Although not of great consequence, tattoos in arm pits of SS were not universal. One prime example of significance was the episode involving Polish troops being rather heavy handed with the NAZIs they were guarding at the Nuremberg trials. Americans replaced them with Latvians. Poles complained that these were all SS and asked Americans to examine their arms for the tattoos. No tattoos were found. My uncle was one of the Latvians and confirmed that they had been SS but for some reason never were tattooed.

I have read Stalingrad and D-Day and I have not yet been disappointed! I love this book, it just as good as the other two I read. It's hard to say which one I like the best. I defiantly plan on reading more of Antony Beevor's books.
