Description

At once a loving legacy and an unsparing depiction of a devastating illness, Danielle Steel’s tribute to her lost son is a gift of life, hope, healing, and understanding to us all.

“This is the story of an extraordinary boy with a brilliant mind, a heart of gold, and a tortured soul. It is the story of an illness, a fight to live, and a race against death.

I want to share the story, and the pain, the courage, the love, and what I learned in living through it. I want Nick's life to be not only a tender memory for us, but a gift to others. . . . I would like to offer people hope and the realities we lived with. I want to make a difference. My hope is that someone will be able to use what we learned, and save a life with it.”—Danielle Steel

From the day he was born, Nick Traina was his mother's joy. By nineteen, he was dead. This is Danielle Steel's powerful, personal story of the son she lost and the lessons she learned during his courageous battle against darkness. Sharing tender, painful memories and Nick's remarkable journals, Steel brings us a haunting duet between a singular young man and the mother who loved him—and a harrowing portrait of a masked killer called manic depression, which afflicts between two and three million Americans.

I often had tears of my own! I feel that I and my family experienced many fights with society in regards to my sister, Vanessa, and her life long battle to grow up. She had Encephalitis at the age of 3 and in 1962 we didn’t have the medical technology of today. She suffered a lot of brain damage! My parents never gave up on her. She is now 62 years old and has the mentality of a 5 year old. Life has been a struggle for her, but she has survived many emotional ups and downs. Our family loves her dearly. Thank you for writing this story of your son. Betty Himan

So many of our children battle this disease in silence to afraid to share it & be judged. 1st & foremost a Mother, Danielle Steele opened her heart & soul for us to meet Nick. I am grateful for her gift of sharing him with us. I needed this book at this exact time to understand my own child’s battle & I Thank her for that.

This has been a challenging read. I could not put it down. As a mother I felt all of the emotions. I learned a great deal about manic depression in young people. The many challenges I felt so strongly. As a teacher I have experienced many children with behavior challenges. I have questioned myself whether I dealt with them all appropriately. Thank you for sharing Nick's life.

The best book I've read in a long time! I love D.S. novels, but this one by far touched my heart and made me cry. I have a deep admiration for Danielle for her deep love, devotion and strength, and for never giving up on her son. Peace and God bless you and your family.

I loved this book! Saddened by his loss. My heart goes out to Danielle's family. I can't imagine how they must feel with the loss. But am grateful that they can share their loss by writing this book.
