An All-Too-Familiar Feeling

Reading this book gave me a sense of foreboding that I have not experienced. As an American, it is easy to think of things such as Nazism during the 1930’s and 40’s as a European problem. Harry does a great job in revealing the human elements behind these historical events and applies them to a new scenario, making the feelings and decisions of his characters seem tragically destined, yet understandable and (at times) justified.
Written in the early 2000’s, this book gives a great reminder to readers about the pitfalls of nationalism, and the dangers of coating malignant rhetoric with patriotic slogans.
This story may be set in the 1930’s in a fantasy world, but the underlying conflicts are applicable today; especially in the current political climate. I believe it is an excellent and stimulating read. I can’t wait to finish the series.
