A really great movie. Superb actors and a great heartwarming story with some fun action scenes. No sex or nudity in this movie that is so often added to movies now. I highly recommend this one.
A real treasure

This movie is absolutely wonderful! Sir Michael Caine, Robert Duvall, and Haley Joel Osment are perfectly cast. So are the dogs, the lion and the pig. By the way, where did the pig disappear to and not show up toward the end? My only wish is that iTunes would include the extras, deleted scenes, gag reels, found on the DVD. It is about an hour’s worth of hidden gems. One scene in particular has them eating the fish shot by shotgun. I think Garth warns Walter not to eat too many of the lead pellets. Please Apple iTunes.
Great comedy action fun for all to enjoy!

This is very heartwarming, as well as an example of great actors at their best. The poor reviews by two of the "top critics" proves that these people sit in ivory towers, lost in attitude. Perfect movie for the entire family. I didn't rent it. I own it. It's that good!

Something’s rotten with Rotten Tomatoes.

This is one of the best family adventure coming of age movies ever made and rotten tomatoes gives it a 59%. What a bunch of fertilizer. This movie is fresh and it’s fun and calls young men upward.

Watching this right now for probably the 7th time (maybe more) in 10 years.
(Non-spoiler alert) Secondhand Lions has very little to do with lions. It is instead a wonderful family-friendly comedy about a boy who goes to stay with his two great-uncles, who live, and have lived, a wildly unconventional life. And yes, they do end up buying a used lion (and some Purina Lion Chow) along the way.
It's really sad that a Rotten Tomatoes critics' score of 59% might keep anyone from checking out Secondhand Lions, but let's look at what really matters -- User Reviews. Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score of 84%, IMDB average rating of 7.6, and 4.68 stars here on iTunes, it's clear this one's a winner.
Duvall, Caine, and Osment are pitch-perfect here, and the writing (Tim McCanlies, who also penned The Iron Giant with Pixar's Brad Bird) keeps the laughes well paced throughout. The dialogue is wonderfully memorable and there are so many great quotes (see IMDB or Wikiquotes for a sampling), but two that will stand out are:
Michael Caine: "I must meet this man!" (must be viewed to be appreciated)
Robert Duvall: "I'm Hub McCann. I've fought in two World Wars and countless smaller ones on three continents. I've led thousands of men into battle with everything from horses and swords to artillery and tanks. I've seen the headwaters of the Nile, and tribes of natives no white man had ever seen before. I've won and lost a dozen fortunes, killed many men and loved only one woman with a passion a flea like you could never begin to understand. That's who I am."
I will say that's it's a shame that iTunes doesn't (at the time of this writing) include Extras. Some of the deleted scenes are also among our favorites, and enchance the movie even further. The scene that explains why there are so many traveling salesmen is classic, turning things on end a bit, although to be fair it is probably best watched after the movie. It would have been great if they could have worked into a mid-credits scene, but I'm not sure that anyone was really doing this at the time this movie was made. And there is an "alternate ending" scene that is worth watching. I'd personally recommend the Blu-ray for this reason, especially given current price points.
Regardless, this is a 5-star movie, and worth watching (again and again).
