'Hard times' used to be my favorite curtis song, or one of my favorite all time songs by any singer. But now, I think 'Billy Jack' is equally as sublimely funk-tastic. Remember the first time I heard it in a parking lot on Sunset boulevard in Silverlake. It was on the radio and I never caught the song title. Years later listening to 'America today'i recognized it as 'Billy Jack'. The wah-wah guitar on this track is genius, as is the vocal. Curtis was a brilliant singer and lyricist, but also an incredible guitarist. I didn't care nothin bout being black. I thought Billy Jack was native american...?

This is it. If you feel, a little happy, dance awhile. Because if the spirt hits you, you got to move. Keep on pushin' --- you hear?

I would go as far as to say that I think that this has to be one of his greatest albums. With tracks like 'Jesus'. One can keep going over and over the album and never get fed up with it. The art work alone say's it all. A must have.

My familiarity with Mayfield's more popular work (Pusherman, etc.) lead me to listen to this album and it has been both surprising and satisfying. Socially conscious and heartfelt, I would recommend this album to anyone who wants a deeper look at a soul music icon.
