  • A wondeful, playful album

    The pairing of commentary and performance illuminates the works in an incredibly effective manner. The performances are powerful, spirited, and precise... and even touching (in the case of the second movement of Son of Chamber Symphony). I enjoyed the insights into the compositions and performance practices. I found the mix on Son of... to be a bit strange (for lack of a better word). The back row of the ensemble seems a little too present but it's a completely subjective consideration. All in all an incredible album... possibly my favorite from Alarm Will Sound.

    The best playing I've heard from Alarm Will Sound. Each momentary instrumental personality pushes forward. Chunky, scratchy walking bass; daringly drama-queen violin; the heaviest stomping contrabassoon; sly clarinets: These pieces haven't sounded more human on record. And it's some of Adams's most lively, sunny, fun music. The podcast is a bonus, the music is just great.
