Doesn’t measure up

As a long-time fan, I can’t tell if this album is just not one of his best, or if he unintentionally sabotaged it by trying to be topical. While the “B-sides” are solid, the covers seem out of place. His smooth playing and gritty vocals are as good as ever, but overall the collection doesn’t come together; particularly now that the political ‘scandal’ has completely unraveled and we realize how misled we all were by career politicians. Listening today ‘Nobody’s Home’ just feels of cringey, and drags down the rest of the album.

Chris Smither is an extraordinary singer, songwriter, and performance artist. He’s been at this for fifty years and still keeps getting better and better. He’s a true American treasure; check out this new album!

I first saw Chris smither playing a small venue in Cambridge, MA called The Garage in 1972.
He played Homunculus and I was hooked. It is so great to hear him still creating and performing a high level. You can hear the weariness of a life fully lived in these songs.
