Actually, I think iTunes needs to put out the 3 disk compilation of Finally the punks are taking Acid!!!! This is what launched me into the early Lips. And in my opinion is better than the lips of today. The highlights on this is when I'm with you, Godzilla flick, and the controversial Jesus shooting.... All in all great start to what would become the Flaming lips.

We bought this record in '85 from our local store's tiny "import section" just on the strength of the crazed cover photo. In a band trying to learn how to write, caught between punk and classic influences, we were blown away by this record. So fun, so immediate and spare. We were thrilled to have the opportunity to open for them 1 month later at Jackson, MS's W.C. Don's as they lurched across the country supporting this record. It was the most ambitious D.I.Y. rock show we'd ever seen. They had their own light show they'd cobbled together from car lights and took the stage with "Tomorrow Never Knows" blasting from a walkman plugged into Wayne's amp. They were gracious and kind and I think we won them over with a cover of Zepp's "Tangerine" thrown in among our Husker/R.E.M./'Mats inspired originals. This album is certainly the work of a young band, but the creativity is clearly in evidence.

Bowie at times, Husker Du the next, always the Lips. I recently rediscovered this album, and am amazed at how authentic they have remained. The music from Hear it Now goes just as well with lasers and balloons as does the newer material, but with scarier balloons.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Flaming Lips from "in a priest driven ambulance" to the present, but you may not be interested in this. It's punk rock with dumb lyrics, and a bunch of boring jams with little melodies. If you watch the Fearless Freaks DVD, it talks about how they were insanely loud and not too good in the very, very beginning. Take my advice. Try Hit to death in the future Head.

I wish I would have discovered them when this this was first released. When I first started listening to them I found that this was one of my favorite albums and since then have dapped into all the sides of the Lips.

This is classic Flaming Lips at it's best, perfect for any fan if they hadn't already purchsed it.
