Oddly enough, I had never heard anything by King Curtis till I stumbled across A Whiter Shade of Pale in a playlist. I can't believe I've never heard this album! I've been listening to it constantly since I purchased it. Every single track is incredible!

I love love love this album. So much groovin' going on here. "Changes" is probably my favorite from this album. Every member in the band shines on this song. Take a listen to Billy Preston's organ solo on this one. WOW. Ode To Billie Joe is another favorite of mine. This is a nice mellow funk tune where Curtis uses some kind of wah wah effect on the sax. Soul Serenade closes out the set in a very very good way. It's so smooth you'll melt. If you're lookin' for some jammmin' sax and a funkin' good record, then you need to get this one.

I HAVE BEEN A STUDENT OF KING CURTIS, WAY BACK IN 1970, WHEN MY DAD BOUGHT ME MY FIRST TENOR. I PLAYED EVERY RIFF: HONK: DIP: YOU NAME IT I TRIED TO PLAY JUST LIKE HIM. HE WAS WHAT JIMI HENDRICKS IS TO GUITAR PLAYERS. ALWAYS IMITATED- "WHICH IS NOT SECRET". HIS WAS AND ALWAYS WILL BE, TRULY THE GREATEST SESSION SAX PLAYER OF ALL TIMES. ALL HAIL THE KING.!!

I've heard a live cut of Soul Serenade by the Allman Brothers Band where Duane, who had played with King Curtis, talks this album up as one of the greatest of all time. He's right (and if you can't trust Duane Allman, who can you trust?) so you should hear this too. The backing musicians are all-stars, including Billy Preston on organ. Wonderful music. At the same shows this group backed Aretha Franklin who was joined by Ray Charles for a live jam that's on the deluxe edition of her live at Fillmore album. Do yourself a favor and get both sets.
