Bam.
The Police broke up. It was heavy news.
Favorite drummer, favorite band in high school.
Favorite band of so many during the early 80’s.
I always wonder what a 6th Police album would’ve been like.
Felt like we were robbed.
Who in the world lets Stewart Copeland go?
This album ended up fitting in that space fairly well, but the jazz direction was a speed bump for me as a 17 year old.
A different direction, but the intelligence level was still maxed.
It’s really bold in spots, he did manage to find some great players.
A handful of memorable songs, and some obvious filler tunes… a void Summers and Copeland would have filled.
Fortress Around Your Heart is the enormous piece that holds the album up. It’s brilliant.
Other gems sprinkled in that have become Sting classics.
The next release, Nothing Like The Sun, is world class. Side by side they are enough to keep the Police buzz going.

This album brings me back to a time of complete innocence for me. I was only 16 when I bought this album. And I fell in love with it. Listening to it now, I’m nostalgic for 1985. I didn’t realize my potential back then. But I do now. Sting is more than just a talented artist. He’s a poet with a stunning voice. For a moment he brought me back to 1985.

The Album Review is not entirely wrong, but "Russians" is a simple straightforward song without pretention. Sting is not trying for respect. If anything, he's crying for life. Remember in 1985, we were all still legitamately afraid of getting nuked. It was as much a plea with the Soviet leaders as it was with the western leaders, that the Russians loved their children just as much as we loved ours.
