This album makes plopping sounds. Plopping sounds are not good. James winces at plopping.
  • My Introduction to The Cure

This album was my gateway to The Cure. I was introduced to this great record back in late 1985 when a friend raided his older brother's cassette collection. From the opening song "Inbetween Days" I was hopelessly addicted.

Anyone even thinking of getting into the Cure should start here. Good mix of their styles all in easy-to-digest portions all kicked off with one of their best songs of all, In Between Days. I started here myself, became addicted to the album, and then to the band. Now that I've got everything, I still think this is minute-for-minute the strongest Cure album. I personally listen to Seventeen Seconds and Disintegration a bit more, but there's so much mix tape fodder on Head on the Door... it's almost a better first purchase than Staring At The Sea for the uninitiated. Every song is a potential single and will make you sit up and take notice. As for the remaster, it sounds better than ever. Unless you're a rabid fan, you don't need any of the bonus tracks... your next task should really be to seek out the era's b-sides from the Join The Dots compilation. In a word: Essential.
  • AHHHH the Boris Williams years....

Yes, the albums with drummer, Boris Williams was the golden era for the Cure. Yes, they have great albums before him but it was during his term they really shined. This is the first in that series. The Cure finally feel solid and the songwriting is peaking.

This is when the cure started to get REALLY good. Probably their best album from start to finish. A must if you don't have it...

  • All the b-sides ARE available

Smith released every living B-side a year or so ago as part of the 4-disc boxset, while all the remixes are available on "Mixed Up." Not including them here shows integrity, actually. The single disc remaster will come out later this year, as was the case with the earlier 4 records, so fans who don't care for all the demos can buy those--and for cheap, even retail.
