I have been looking for this album for over 30 years. I have the LP but could not get the CD. Thanks to the ITune store. I finally got it. Without a doubt this is the best LP Johnny Mathis has ever recorded. Thom Bell you are a genius.

If you love the Philly Sound or a great voice, this album is for you. What a match: the super-talented writers, arrangers, and musicians (e.g. Thom Bell, Linda Creed) of Philadelphia and one of the iconic voices of our time. The title of the album is not only the "title cut"; it is a declaration by Mr. Mathis that he has immersed himself in a prototypically African-American sound with which he was not associated heretofore. His "homecoming" is indeed masterful. Without a doubt, one of the most overlooked works of this genre.
  • One best album recoreded that year, a real surprise!

Thom Bell and linda Creed produced two albums for Mr. Mathis. I'm Coming home was the first and best one. Mathis has always admitted that he was the type of singer that had to see every note on the score, he could not wing it. However Thom Bells lush arrangements and R&B dna was the right mix to turn Johnny M into a smooth soul singer. Even now when I play the Lp for folks (and kids) they don't believe it's Johnny Mathis singing. His sweet smooth voice too often is paired with overblown arrangements that make the whole listening experience to damn diabetic. However this along with his Ellington recording at least demonstrate that given the right material and arranger he can stand with the best of them. He has recorded a lot of material over the years and a lot of it weak (like other greats) but one listen to this recording and you will agree that his record company need to issue a real musical box set of his best (quality) recordings not just the hits. The I'm Coming Home recording even got him an appearance on Soul Train! This is real "let's get it on Sista" stuff. I hope the iTunes recordings are as lush and maintain the high fidelity sound as the orginal recordings. Remember Thom Bell & Linda Creed were the team that put the Spinners on the map! Track number 6 "Life is A Song Worth Singing" was even covered by Teddy Pendergrass (very good) and track 7 "A Baby's Born" was covered by James Ingram (extremely good).
