Desperate to impress a gal during my 1st year of college (1982) I got tickets to an 8 o'clock Moody Blues concert. The to-and-fro rendered it an hour drive to pick up my date and make the show on time. I wasn't worried because a band I'd never heard of (Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble) were opening that night. We walked from the car lot into "Lenny" perhaps 12 bars late. Oddly, you could hear every inflection of every note from the hot dogs and coke concession that encircled the 12 Thousand seat stadium. I've never been the same.

Tightrope, Crossfire, Texas Flood, and so many other songs written by the Best Blues Player in History. Never seen anybody played guitar with such raw force, seemed like electric shocks. Stevie's music will live on forever. RIP

In my opinion, this was Stevie's best album. And I do have all of his other ones. Too bad we lost him so early in his life. I saw him live many years ago, and he just blew me away.
  • The great SRV!

I saw a young SRV in Seattle for free at the annual Bumbershoot festival around 82 or 83 and he blew the whole crowd away. Half the crowd of around 7,000 just stumbled in on the show. I had never seen a guitarist like him before,it was as close to Hendrix as I could get. I saw him several times after that and he always put on a great show. This album catches that early work at it's best ......long live SRV!

I saw Stevie's last show. That was my first show ever. That's when I started to listen for the details and that is when I started to do my research. Stevie bleed willingly during every show. His drive is what set him apart from everyone else and they all know it. He took it to another level, without trying to be anybody that he was not. This was Stevie in his infancy, and there lies the beauty of his choices for songs. He is paying homage to all that influences him in his youth. He also did his research and studied by ear. It is an amazing piece of history that deserves to be recognized for what it is, and that is a damn good recording of a young artist in his development stage. This was before the full double trouble lineup and before the ray. He was trying to figure out who he was as an artist, by emulating the ones that he loved. When you listen to the original Howlin Wolf recording that he pulled the "Shake for Me" cover from, it is apparent that he is a special artist. The riff is verbatim with more style and soul. Stevie was one of the few musicians who understood the natural progression of the blues. This is a testament to his natural love and drive for doing it right. He is, in my opinion, the best blues guitarest that I ever witnessed live, and I have seen them all. If you want to play the Robert Johnson card, I will give you that because who can argue with him. But Stevie was special. And in my eyes, it is because he was reverant of his forefathers, that makes him the legitimate first son of the white blues generation. It would have been five stars, but the sound quality does not do justice to the tone he was forever searching for. His sound live was complete, alive, and instantly recognizable as his. Dig deeper if you want more.

What's the right word to describe his solos? They are at times humorous in a cocky sort of way. I'm a big fan and this is his best in my opinion.

The best guitar player that ever lived!! Awsome to jam with, sing along to and is lovely on the ears. Listen to the KING of blues in his yonger days, and before his untimely passing. Pay omage the the king, every time you listen to this album.
