  • Good Song, Good Singer

I haven't heard the entirty of her song, but I love what I hear in the preview. I am also a fan of her music generally. I have to say that my favorite song is 10,000 miles. I'm not much of a singer, but I sing THAT ONE in the shower. I am confident she won't disappoint. How old is she anyways?

I don't know how you can separate politics when reviewing a blatantly political song. As a fan of MCC for well over a decade, this song is not so much a cheap shot, myopic view of what is in reality a lot more complicated and multi-dimensional than what the song would suggest, but rather it is a betrayal of what MCC herself has worked to accomplish as a songwriter. For an artist who has continually amazed and touched me because of her ability to see the hidden complexities and complicated fabric of life and love, MCC seems to have sold that out in anger and, I hate to suggest, opportunism. The issues of the Iraq war, George Bush, and the Dixie Chicks backlash are inherently more complicated than a "jingoistic bumper sticker," but MCC seems to feel you can sum up all of them in a musical flip of the middle finger. For someone who has built a reputation and a following through seeing humanity in a deeper, more personal way, MCC doesn't hesitate to caricaturize half the nation (and possibly her own fan base) based on a political bent, reducing millions of human beings into mindless followers who can't think for themselves. That's not MCC, and it's very unfortunate. Life is more than politics. Life is more complicated than black and white. Of all people, MCC should be able to tell you that.

This song is not only wonderful but it says it all! God Bless MCC! She's America's greatest country song writer, singer, poet laureate! And to Mary Chapin I say, "Come On, Come On".

I LOVE this song! Mary Chapin Carpenter proves once again why she is one of the smartest songwriters in contemporary music, and, as usual, does it with a tune that's just good fun to listen to. This one's for the rest of us -- the ones who are tired of the flag-waving, the name-calling, and the political drama. And it makes me smile that it's coming from an artist I've loved and respected all these years. Thanks MCC!
  • Songwriters who make us think.....

Mary Chapin continues to transcend boundaries around musical style and genre---and this song is a gem. Her music offers up many gifts that go far beyond the melody line. I love songwriters who make us think. It's easy to stand your ground when it isn't going to cost you anything. Standing your ground and speaking your mind are acts of courage--and "On With the Song" inspires all of us to take heart and sing this to ourselves and each other when we speak truth.

The wait has been long, but it has been worth it. Only a few songwriters can do it like Chapin, and On With the Song is one of the perfect examples of her talent. I'm thrilled that she changed labels, especially when she produces music like this. Woo hoo! She's back!

There's just something about the way she writes and sings that just takes me back to my roots. From the sound of this new single this album going to be another memorable one. Welcome back, Mary! Can't wait until March 6 when the whole album is released!

Truthful and simple to the point!!!! To dedicate to those who are willing to speak out no matter if it is right or wrong....We all have a right to express our opinions. Mary Chapin Carpenter is always wonderful to hear no matter what she sings. Yes it's very country!!

Looking straight down her barrel at the reactionary forces that try to fool the world into thinking dissent is a treasonous crime, Carpenter pulls the lyrical trigger and blasts a clean, powerful bullseye. She speaks her mind on the cultural divides in this country and is willing to stand up to the political leaders that have giddyap'ed their way through the world, deciding to do whatever they want to do. This song is the pissed-off companion to the gentler (but no less articulate) "Why Shouldn't We" that has had people on their feet in con certs of the last several years. The forthcoming album will prove to be a very topical and introspective view of her world and ours.
