A fabulous brass album, as expected from Alessi. The variety of ensembles he plays with are awesome... the Juilliard Trombone Ensemble (future trombone stars), the Extension Ensemble brass quintet (incredible group sound), a jazz Big Band of top NY freelancers (thrilling), and a mixed instrument "street band" provides some tasty Italian flavor! This is the way to make an album!
  • Do not buy this CD! Please, read for more details.

Don't buy this CD. I won't tell you why but I just expect you guys to trust me. I tried to make this review helpful. Let me know if it's not helpful. But Joe Alessi could've twisted Daybreak more for musicality rather than solely based on interpratation. Like that part in the cadenza but he almost didn't. Good thing for complicity because he took Nessun Dorma way too slow. That tune is mostly played as a bebop standard in jazz circles, but then again Joe Alessi is not your Frank Rosolino. That's the only thing he can't do: improvise to the point of exertion. But anyway, I went off on a tangent. I was trying to say La Traviata needs more roboticness to it. It's too beautiful or lyrical. It needs to be almost mechanical -- a punto y punto (if you catch my draft).
  • Incredible!

Excellent playing. As a trombone player who is now concentrating on opera, this is by far the best combination I could ask for. My only complaint is with the Nessun Dorma track. His playing is great, but the arrangement sounds like it came from the East Village Opera Company, and they tend to put a different spin on things compared to old-school productions. Either way, this is Joseph Alessi at his best.
  • Beautiful!

This is the loveliest album you'll find this year! The trombone is the most lyrical instrument around, though not much appreciated, and Mr. Alessi's the best. If you've not heard a trombone in this setting, you owe to yourself to check this out.
  • Great cd

He is one of the best trombonists of our generation. These are lovely songs very beautifully played. It makes me long for Italy, and I've never been there. His mother was a soprano at the metropolitan opera . . . he knows this repertoire! I don't know why anyone wouldn't want this CD. It's a steal at $7.99.
