I love this album, however I am writing this review to point out that track 9 has been ordered between tracks 4 and 5 by mistake. It is easily fixable by manually changing the track numbers once you have downloaded the album, or it is correct on the Warner Music rerelease available here for a dollar more.

Somber, stately, and reverent, the nine untitled movements (and concluding seven-minute epilogue) presented by keyboardist-composer Vangelis convey the mood of a requiem. These 10 lengthy works form a tribute to the respected native of Crete (1541-1614) whose religiously minded paintings (many created in near isolation in the Spanish city of Toledo) are notable, among other reasons, for their singular cross-pollination of Byzantine, Venetian, and Spanish influences. (The artist's nickname, El Greco, is in fact a linguistic merger of Spanish and Greek.) Musically, the recording dwells in a near-classical atmosphere that only occasionally offers any hints of rhythmic progression or ethereal expansiveness. Instead, the music conveys a more formal, classically rooted seriousness that at times features the operatic embellishments of soprano Montserrat Caballe and tenor Kostantinos Paliatsaras. Perhaps the recording's loveliest moments reside in the fifth movement, where Vangelis adorns the sustained earnestness of his work with some gently evocative piano runs. This, however, is an exception to an otherwise weighty musical endeavor.

This is one of Vangelis BEST works to date. His music has soared to new heights with this unforgettable soundtrack. What amazes me is each time he does one of these soundtracks, they are SO outstanding that they become part of the movie, instead of just being the "background" music. Take this musical journey and enjoy Vangelis at his best !

Classical and symphonic in scope, this is Vangelis' unsung masterwork. In fact along with Love's Forever Changes, Little Feat's Feats Don't Fail Me Now, and Talking Heads' Remain In Light it's placed in the top ten of my 1,500 album collection.

Vangelis has always had a magical sound that carries my emotions and stimulates my mind. You can never go wrong listening to Vangelis to meditate with. Ruth Navarro
