For me, I was in my freshman dorm room one night in the spring of 2004 when my neighbor, a small, bearded fellow and incredible guitarist, brandished a CD. Inscribed on the CD were the words "Old Crow Medicine Show." With his eyes still filled with the wonder of discovery, my friend said, "you have to listen to this." Everyone seems to recall the first time they ever heard this album. The event leaves such an indelible mark in your memory, because almost are the songs are so compelling. The sole exception is probably "Big Time in the Jungle." But the rest of the album is so immediately accessible whatever your prior musical tastes--the songs are just that good. It's not that the harmonies hit all the right notes (and they do). Old Crow brings the gritty attitude of urban youth to each song in a genre that is too often stale. I mean, I expect my mountain music to be a bit rough-hewn; to paint with a broad brush, the music comes from the land of moonshine, infamous feuding, violent mining labor fights with coal corporations, and communal struggle. Old Crow perfectly conveys this rough-and-tumble spirit through their craft, and it pays off. From this provincial foundation, Old Crow touches upon something universally attractive--vitality comes to mind--that shakes the listener from the doldrums of his mundane existence. And it makes him want to hoot. Loudly. In other words, this is an essential album for anyone with functioning ears.

If you don't love "Wagon Wheel" you shouldn't be listening to music... The whole album is great, and has sparked an interest in bluegrass for a every rock, pop and country music fan I know who's listened to it. This is one of the few albums I've listened to in years that completely caught me by surprised. I expected to hate it, and in the end, nearly all of the songs got a 5 statr rating in my iPod...

Ill start by saying im not a hater of the band at all, and wagon wheel is definitely a magnificent song. It disappoints me to see that the price of OCMS's most popular song is $1.29. Price gouging at its finest...

"Wagon Wheel" reminds me so much of "All I Can Do is Write About It" by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Just a great 1-5-minor6-4 progression with heartfelt lyrics. Absolutely beautiful. Love it!!
  • I have to comment on the most critical reviewers

I must be bored but please look at the reviewers who rated with low stars and check out their other reviews. Two are huge Dbags and the other is rating disney and jonas or moon something or something I don't get. I absolutely love the critical reviewer who hates pop according to name yet loves nickelback (nothing against them at all but would consider them pop).

I guess OCMS is pretty big around Knoxville TN because of the frequency with which they visit, but I'm still not a huge fan. The music is very simplistic and even though the lyrics are pretty good I probably would not recommend them to non-bluegrass/Americana fans. Energetic live shows though

When you live in Nashville you hear "Wagon Wheel" all the time and the crowd goes wild! It took me going on vacation to realize this band wasn't everywhere. What a shame! The other reviews are spot on about their soulful sound...this is a Nashville classic
