  • Fabulous Beethoven cycle

This is one of five CDs in a cycle of the nine Beethoven recently recorded by Paavo Järvi and they are wonderful. The tempo is lively, but not too fast, as you can tell from listening to the samples. The decision to put the 5th before the 1st on this CD is a bit of a mystery to me, but there it is. I have this on SACD, which brings me to another mystery. Why spend $10 to get this as a collection of MP3 files when the CD can be purchased for a dollar or two more, especially when the CD is a best-of-all-worlds multichannel hybrid SACD? The CD layer will play in ordinary CD players, but if you have a player that supports SACD you can enjoy the 5.0 channel high definition SACD version which provides a listening experience that beats even CD hands down.

Paavo Jarvi gives us a brand new look into two of the most important works by Beethoven. The Kammerphilharmonie Bremen play with surgical precision at impressive pace, while maintaining the tenderness and sweetness of the movements that require such approach. Pay special attention to the Andante con Moto and the Allegro on the 5th, which are the best recorded and performed audio I've ever heard. Don't take it just from me though, this is what The New York Sun had to say about the Jarvi and Kammerphilharmonie Bremen: "the authoritative Beethoven orchestra of our day".
