  • Innovation and Rock: Two Essentials.

British rock artists like Kasabian paint a starkly different picture than the pop-infected work of American rock. This album is even more versatile than the band's previous releases, making it more interesting than the older albums. The rebellious yet relaxed "Underdog" defiantly opens the album, which is also populated with songs like the quiet, brooding "Secret Alphabets" and the rapid tempo-switching "Fire." Get out of the way, All American Rejects, because Kasabian represents the real new age of rock.

Their best album behind the unbeatable debut. I love that the music has a slight theme, which makes everything seem more cohesive. "Underdog" and "Fire" are two of my favorite songs of all-time, by any band. I'd like to see more albums like this from the boys: themed music that still rocks in Kasbian's special way.

I don't know why these guys aren't more popular. I found them through the song club foot, then I began searching further into their music. They're great! My favorite song is Thick as Theives

I was stunned with their earlier work, though their later work doesn't do anything for me. It sounds more like they're just putting out music that sounds decent, but it's not blowing any hats off. Still, I think they have potential to write and produce an album that’s great from start to finish, as I thought their first album was. This is decent but certainly not their best.

  • Too Simple, Not Enough Layers

West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum is lacking in most of the things that brought me into Kasabians fan base. Underdog, Where Did All the Love Go?, and Take Aim were closer to what I originaly liked about Kasabian, and Vlad the Impaler has become my new favorite song. However the other tracks on the album are just to ... let's say slow and main stream. My favorite thing about Kasabian was how their songs had multipule levels of sounds and over half the tracks on West Ryder are just to simple compared to past Kasabian albums.

This album really is aptly named. West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum sounds as if a few escapees snuck into a recording studio and laid these tracks down before the trazodone wore off. The songs that don't actually resemble Sid Barrett stoned out of his mind sound like the band are simply treading water in a sea of molasses, gin, and qualudes(same thing I suppose). There's a time and place to listen to this album(probably best after an extremely hard night of drinking) but as far as I'm concerned these songs are shallow and ridiculous. For the record I'll say I thought Empire was a pretty great album with great energy but this is just sloppy...Joe.
  • This is how to rock

While rock is pretty much dead in the U.S. with bubblegum bands like My Chemical Romance and All American Rejects infecting the airwaves, in Britain rock is doing better than ever. Even decent American rock bands, like Kings of Leon do better in England. Kasabian may not be all that popular in the U.S., but they had pulled out two solid albums before this one and both have been megahits. However this one is closer to their debut, which was catchier and more electronic than Empire. Possibly the best rock album in 2009 aside from Franz Ferdinand's "Tonight". If you're into 00s British rock check also Bloc Party, Kaiser Chiefs, Arctic Monkeys, The Fratellis, Hard-Fi, and perhaps the best rock band in the world today: Muse.
