Two Hands One Mouth Twenty-one brilliant songs
By My Other Voice
With over 40 years of music, choosing 20 songs for a live album can't be easy. Favorites are left out, oddities put in, but I'll take Sparks in any form they wish to offer us. With no backing band Russell's glorious falsetto gallantly navigates the intricacies of Ron's witty, ironic, poignant, ever amusing lyrics, and Ron's keyboard makes a big lush sound. The brothers Mael mesh beautifully, no false notes literally or figuratively. Highlights are The Rhythm Thief, This Town, Never Turn Your Back on Mother Earth, and Sherlock Holmes, not to mention the bits from their Ingmar Bergman radio play. Sparks are sui generis. No one does what they do, or comes even close. They are the most underrated American group, hands down. It wounds me to imagine how many people have never heard a Sparks song, or even heard of Sparks. Please remedy that with this brilliant collection.
