Classic Brecker, Classic Music

Early in their careers, the Brecker Brothers played with Don Grolnick in Steps Ahead. In 1996, they reunited in a group headed by Grolnick for dates in England including this concert in Queen Elizabeth Hall. Peter Erskine, the drummer (Fuzzy Music) originally issued the concert’s first set as a CD. Subsequently, he issued the whole concert in MP3 format. The London Concert is one of those rare nights when everything worked - the songs (many of them Grolnick compositions) were well chosen, the solos were very strong, the interchange with the audience made clear what a special evening this was. Michael Brecker has a number of very good solos including one on Grolnick’s rework of Wayne Shorter’s “Waterbabies" that is best described as incandescent.
