  • CATHEDRAL

    By Mr. Dauterive
An okay VH album; not as good as Fair Warning. Cathedral is a showstopper - Eddie hammers the frets with his left fingers and uses the right hand on the volume knob - no picking at all.

A fun summer album but not a top shelf Van Halen album. Eddie as always shines throughout.
  • Would have made two great EPs.

    By PKMcBurroughs
Certainly the weakest of the original VH albums, that perhaps would have been better as an EP and released without the covers, and yet, at the same time, a completely essential VH album that I've always had a soft spot for. Weird, right?

  • Underrated album from VH

I myself would definitely rank this album in the top 5 albums in VH catalog. A fun, rocking album. I wish they would of put another original song written by VH instead of cover songs
  • Dive Deeper & You’ll Be Rewarded

    By KorinaJam
The casual Van Halen listeners often dismiss this album with comments like “weakest of the DLR era” or “It’s mostly a covers album” blah, blah blah. Here’s the deal. EVERY VH album with Dave and Edward features musical goldmines that are abundantly creative, clever and timeless. Diver Down is NO exception. Let’s dive deeper... First, there’s the musical diversity. No band of their era (with the exception of Queen) had such an intense respect and knowledge of different musical genres that they could draw upon when the creative spark was ignited. “Big Bad Bill Is Sweet William Now” swings like a long lost big band jazz standard, Rumored to feature the Van Halen’s father Jan on clarinet. “The Full Bug” gives us a glimpse into what REALLY made the creative partnership between Dave and Edward work: a common passion for the blues. As Dweezil Zappa recently stated VH blues is “blues, but not like any blues you’ve EVER heard before.” Same with “Bug.” Keith Richard once commented that you’re listening to the REAL Mick Jagger when he blows the harp. Well, when Edward starts riffing the blue notes and Dave kicks in with his whisky drenched vocal musings there’s nothing more truthful or awe inspiring. It’s the heart of their partnership and a peak inside the soul of their genius. Then there’s “Dancing In The Streets.” A big part of VH’s popular appeal was how sweet they could sound...makes the girls dance and the guys chase after ‘em. The background vocals are a big factor in why this is so. “Dancing” is a prime example. And then there’s “Hang ‘Em High”...It’s a freight train of a song...the relentless groove and tempo, how perfectly impossible it is that Dave keeps up with Edward’s ferocious guitar with equally inventive vocal Interplay ranks among their greatest moments. Read that again. Listen to the song. You’ll get it. “Pretty Woman” is a popular cut and like all Dave era VH, the band manages to make it sound NOTHING like the original. It sounds like what it is: another VH classic. Edward Van Halen is sadly gone, but he will never be forgotten. Do your part. Rediscover his music and dive deeper. Share it with your friends and family. Listen to ALL of his tunes not just the hits and appreciate his genius. It’s a gift to all of us who love music. Dive deeper and you will be rewarded. Rock on...
  • Great record for cover record.

    By johnnynycborntowin
The label forced Van Halen to get back into the studio. So they recorded a couple of covers and some new stuff. And it’s still an amazing record. The pretty woman cover was a huge hit for a covers record this was a huge hit for Van Halen. Then 1984 came after this.
  • Least favorite album.

    By Crempster
This is my least favorite album of the Diamond Dave era. There are a few good songs on here along with Eddies great guitar work. But overall it’s just mostly cover songs which I don’t like. But if your a Van Halen fan there are a few tracks off here that are worthy of downloading.

  • Two or three great songs, but this was too hastily assembled

    By Longtimeapplehomer
I’m not a big fan of Van Halen making an album that’s half covers. Two of the covers are great and Intruder is my second-favorite instrumental, but there’s WAY too much filler.
