The most famous ancient sites of Iran. Persepolis, literally meaning "city of Persians", started by Darius (ca.550BC) and finished by Xerxes. In 330 BC, Alexander the Great, burned the city. It was the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire . Persepolis is situated 70 km north-east of city of Shiraz. UNESCO declared the citadel of Persepolis a World Heritage Site in 1979. In the area is located Pasargada, the first dynastic capital of the Achaemenid Empire, founded by Cyrus II the Great. Naqsh-e Rustam, Four tombs belonging to Achaemenid kings are carved out.The tombs are known locally as the 'Persian crosses', The horizontal beam of each of the tomb's facades is believed to be a replica of the entrance of the palace at Persepolis.
