The ensuing dissonance builds a sense of dread from knowing that after that moment of calm begins the battle. For me, the sounds of cicadas are evocative of my Grandfather’s property in Harden, some four hours south of Sydney. As he ages, I worry about what the future will hold, what will happen to him, the farm, and his memory. All the while, the cicadas chirp and my sense of dread grows.
