MAVIS! is the first documentary on gospel/soul music legend and civil rights icon Mavis Staples and her family group, The Staple Singers. From the freedom songs of the ’60s and hits like “I’ll Take You There" in the ’70s, to funked-up collaborations with Prince and her recent albums with Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, Mavis has stayed true to her roots, kept her family close, and inspired millions along the way. At 75, she's making the most vital music of her career, and her message of love and equality is needed now more than ever. Mavis and Jeff Tweedy have been collaborators for many years. They've worked together on two albums, ONE TRUE VINE and YOU ARE NOT ALONE, and in 2015, Jeff helped Mavis finish a lost record by her late father, Pops Staples, entitled DON'T LOSE THIS. In this scene from the film, Mavis joins Jeff on stage at the 2014 Newport Folk Festival to sing "Wrote A Song For Everyone". MAVIS! will have its World Premiere at the 2015 South by Southwest Film Festival, and additional screenings at Full Frame and Hot Docs festivals later this spring. Screenings in cities nationwide, broadcast and home video coming soon!
