Home Affairs

'Home Affairs' is based on a real-life experience had at a Home Affairs office in Humansdorp, a small town in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. The story is about two individuals who come to Home Affairs for different reasons; Oscar to register the death of his wife and Wendy to change the gender on her identity card from male to female. The contrast between human experience and the regulated administration that comes with existence is briefly explored in this short film. The potential warmth of subtle, everyday interaction between two strangers is highlighted against often problematic and seemingly meaningless bureaucracy. 'Home Affairs' was filmed at the Scalabrini Centre in Cape Town. The Scalabrini Centre offers help for refugees and immigrants in Cape Town. The renting of their venues goes towards funding the continuation of the centre.
