Explore New Zealand's back country history. The Stratford-Okahukura(Taumarunui) railway line took over thirty years to build with more than twenty tunnels in this rugged hill country. Closed in 2009 you can now cruise the quiet countryside on adapted golf carts or rail bikes. Forty kilometres is a good workout but hey it's a railway and relatively flat. The gears make it easy and the long freewheeling sections fantastic! Above all it's unbelievably quiet and peaceful. There's a real feeling of the grit and determination that developed this country and the genuine warmth of the guides and local helpers makes the experience very special.
