"The Artistic Disciplines" Thibaut Duverneix directed this video installation for “Pas Perdus,” a corridor filled with a mosaic of screens in Montreal’s Place des Arts. 20 scenarios depicted over 35 screens illustrate the different forms of live performance shown at the venue. While each screen has a specific action, the content often merges and interacts with a neighboring screen. Gravity is distorted and proportions are exaggerated, placing the viewer in a surreal landscape of performance. Like in the video installation, the music is a patchwork, a hybrid made from disparate elements - strings, voice, guitar, sanza, syths, drum, piano... - deconstructed and reassembled in order to create an audio ambiance which lives in harmony with the visuals. Disjointed and playful, this is an installation that moves or amuses you, or even better, both at the same time. A musical tram leads the eyes and the attention, and is indispensable to the coherence of the installation as a whole. L’ensemble se veut le reflet des différents types de spectacles que propose la Place des Arts, dans leur spécificité mais aussi dans leur imbrication. L’accent est mis sur le mouvement et la notion de performance inhérente à toute pratique artistique. Et comme l’installation vidéo, la musique est un patchwork, un hybride fait d’éléments disparates –cordes, chant, guitare, sanza, synthétiseur, batterie, piano...- déconstruits et réassemblés pour créer une ambiance sonore qui vient épouser le visuel. Une trame musicale qui guide le regard, indispensable à l’unité de l’installation toute entière. Une expérience décousue et ludique, qui vous émeut ou vous amuse. Ou mieux, les deux à la fois.
